Big Buddha Phuket

Big Buddha is - well big! The statue stands on a hill and can be seen from most parts of the southern parts of Phuket Island.
The views from the hill are wonderful.
The statue has been under construction for many years now.
But there is enough there now for it to be a major pilgrimage place or perhaps more likely a major tourist trap.
I love it - but loved it more in the early days.
See this site for a list of the several blog postings Jamie has done over the years about big Buddha.

As with churches and cathedrals in the UK there is a need for money. Building and maintenance are not cheap.
I just wish it was a little less obvious at the Big Buddha.

One of the first things we saw was a table where sat the money counters.
Money from things sold and donation boxes throughout the site.

These pots contained coins.

The spiritual part of the temple was much deeper within.

Pilgrims and tourists can buy bells to hang in the trees.
Perhaps I should have done.

Mam and John sit and relax whilst we tourists see all we can.

Chalong jetty - by Simon.
We have walked out there in the early evening several times.

Because of the scaffolding on the statue, photographs of the rear were more satisfying.

Congratulations to Simon!
I think this is a brilliant picture.

Simon and the view towards the south west.

Jessica cannot resist a cat.

Ring the bell for good fortune.

Rub the centre and make it ring.
The trouble is few people can do it.
But John could - and gained so many admiring glances.

Look at that so satisfied look on John's face!

Time for the family to move on.

We were heading next to Wat Chalong, as seen here from Big Buddha Hill and the benefit of telephoto lens.
Scroll down to see the last 2 parts of the day.
