Happy, sunny day at Tynemouth.

Tynemouth was gentle and felt very homely - very suitable for a Grandma P home.
We arrived on the Metro into an entrancing station - more of that on a Metro blog posting.
I now would like to be there on a Saturday - an antiques and collectables market is held under the beautiful station roof.
But we were there on a Thursday and went to explore the town and the views across the river and coast.
We ate at The Salutation Inn in the wide main street.
Tynemouth developed around the original 7th century monastery and castle on the headland overlooking the Tyne estuary.

The 2 piers enclosing the Tyne estuary and a small harbour for Tynemouth.
The black rocks are covered at high tide; they are known as The Middens. They stretch some way up the estuary. They can be most hazardous for the unwary - in 1864 5 ships were lost in 3 days.

Looking up the River Tyne towards Newcastle.
Middens still uncovered at low tide.

Ships pass unseen.
