Glorious Godstone Part One

Today had provided some of the spark that was missing yesterday.

We had a day out.
We had already planned to visit Godstone but we added to our itinerary.

Almost a year ago family gathered at the church for the funeral of Gordon, Bill's cousin Ann's husband.
Neither Bill nor I had been to that part of Godstone - the original old village.
We had been fascinated by the old houses there and planned to have a better look some day.
We took photos of course - but these will be posted on the blog tomorrow.

Then we went into the Godstone that we did already know - and quite a lot of that is old too.
We were not sure where to stop for a snack and in the end went into the The White Hart, a Beefeater pub and restaurant.

We delivered the book, Glorious Godstone, to the EBay buyer - not to his home but to the building supplies company that bears his name.

We looked round the Emporium (small antiques centre). There was nothing there for us. I found it all to be a bit twee really.

Then we went to visit Ann and talked the afternoon away.
And we talked of the buyer of the book.
Ann used to work for his mother and his wife in later years.
Ann can remember the buyer being sent off to boarding school as a young lad, which broke his mother's heart.
Ann has cleaned for a number of people with money enough to employ somebody - but has always been more than an employee. She formed good relationships with people and obviously loved and was loved by this family.
The best part for me is that the buyer's father was almost certainly involved with the publication of the book - he was very involved with the local scouts. And it was the 1st Rover Scout Troop who produced the book in 1935.

By early afternoon the reasonably good November day's weather had turned sour. It rained and the winds blew. The journey back in the dark at 7 o'clock was not pleasant.

Bill has bought a telephoto lens for his camera today - an EBay purchase.

Tomorrow we have an Ebay query to solve - postage charges to Turkey. The internet page is not clear when it comes to Turkey. Can one only post printed paper? And why would surface mail cost more than air mail? I hope Brenda at the local post office will have some answers for the person interested in Bill's Canon A1 camera.

That's all for today. Goodnight.
