November day in Durham

Durham is lovely - full of history.
But it just didn't feel right for us on a dull November day, when we were there.
It was not helped that the cathedral close was taken up with a huge marquee for an event, and trucks and workers noisily getting things ready for said event.
We felt the need to escape!
Tea shops were pretentious or tawdry. No escape there, then.
At least, in November, Durham wasn't heaving with tourists.
The walk by the river was lovely, however.
Here are a few pictures.

Bridge over the River Wear, close to the multi storey car park where we left the car. At the bottom of the city.

The cathedral and brilliant blue sky.

The famous - or infamous knocker.
Except it isn't.
There isn't a pair any more and this is just a replica.

Shadows in the cloisters.

Through a cloister arch.

Castle on the hill.

Street from cathedral close down to the High Street.

Down by the river.
We're by the weir on the Wear......all pronounced the same.

Looking towards the bridge that was my first picture.

Cathedral and river.

Another old cobbled street.

Father Christmas has not arrived yet.
Pretty hut waiting for him in the Durham shopping centre.
