1st March Part 1 Kamala boats and temple.

Kamala is situated north of the main resort of Patong. It is a thriving Thai community and also a holiday centre with a couple of big hotels.
The beach is long and flat and is very suitable for children, and it was here that Jamie brought his family on Christmas Day 2004 - just a few hours before the tsunami.
Kamala was very badly hit by the tsunami. There were many deaths and much destruction of facilities and buildings.
It is our family's place of pilgrimage in a way - to share a little in other peoples' sufferings and to give thanks that nobody in Jamie's world was hurt.
Jamie and I went there together to explore and later to have lunch together.
This time we didn't go to the beach.

A small river winds out to sea and we enjoyed a stroll. The long tail boats always enhance the views.

We could turn and look inland to see the new local temple; the old one had been exceedingly badly damaged by the tsunami.
Inside there was a display of harrowing pictures of that time.

Now it is a centre for peace, contemplation and international co-operation.

One symbol of the co-operation between nations is the garden. One of Australia's TV gardeners brought a team to Kamala to construct a new peace garden for the temple.

What a beautiful flower! I love this photo.

And Jamie was proud of this one! The temple is reflected in a brand new shiny water butt, providing water for the garden.
