10th June. The car fire.
Last night included a time of drama.
I was woken by an explosion - not really loud but quite a bang. I assumed I would never know what it was and my weary body tried to sleep on.
It was 1 o'clock in the morning.
Bill was up and called out that a car was on fire.
He phoned the fire brigade.
It was across the other side of Brighton Road - just a little lower down from where our flat had been. The flames were furious, leaping high into the air. I feared for the houses because the front gardens there are tiny and so the burning car was close to the front windows.
The fire engine arrived quickly. The men are trained for such things and soon the flames had been dowsed. The men hosed down the front of the house too and also another car parked close by. Bill took a couple of pictures from our front garden - and one later today.

The houses beyond were not damaged, but you can see how the hedge had been badly scorched and lost all its new green leaves.
