9th August In St Omer

St Omer is a small and typically French town.
There is a central square with the town hall at one end. There are cafes and little shops round the square and along the little streets leading from the square. There is a cathedral and other historic buildings.
Life throughout Europe these days has many similarities whichever country you are in and yet each country has its own atmosphere and it is good to seek out the specialities.

And French cake shops - patisseries - are very special.

People in the UK are gradually learning to explore seafood. French fish stalls are full of colour and salty aromas. The fishmonger in Auchan near Boulogne takes great pride in his work and often is heard singing.

This is a picture of the main square - a web site picture. It is a pity that the photographer didn't wait until that lorry on the right had gone - then you would have seen a cafe we have been to several times called The Blue Note. It is a popular and vibrant cafe.

Another website picture showing the cathedral. The stone work is in a bad way and they badly need funds to renovate.

Whether you are a Catholic or not, there is always a good spiritual feel to lighting a candle in a cathedral.

All our thoughts, prayers, hopes and fears can be symbolised in the light and heat of a candle.

We walked along a busy shopping street. Ashley decided to have a chocolate crepe from a roadside stall and persuaded Bill to join him.
They look so solemn here ...... but look below - they are enjoying themselves!

It was time to hurry back to Calais in the evening sunlight when they had finished this tasty snack - I had a couple of small pieces from Bill's crepe.
